The Early Days
I've been in and around music all my life. I've met and played with some very talented musicians. I've always sung.
My earliest recollection of singing (for money, that is!) comes from when I was 9 years old. I would learn all the songs in the Top 20 and invite people to call out their favourite tune. I’d sing it and they would give me a “tanner” ( sixpence in old money) - that was a lot for a young lad in those days!
All this took place in the public bar of The Crown in Twickenham. My dad played the piano while I sat on top of it. At home we had an upright piano in the kitchen and a grand piano in the lounge. My dad was a good musician. He could play anything, from old popular songs to classical works.
I began singing with bands while I was still at school, and have done ever since. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I wasn't fronting a group of musicians.
